First Step: Securing Your Special Use Permit

To legally elope in Zion National Park, you’ll need a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service. Here’s how to secure yours:

  1. Submit an Application – Complete the Special Use Permit Application and send it to the park office.
  2. Pay the Fee – There is a $100 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Apply Early – It’s recommended to apply at least 3 months in advance to ensure availability.
  4. Follow the Guidelines – The permit includes regulations to protect the park’s environment, including group size limits and restrictions on decorations.

Navigating the Zion Shuttle System

Zion National Park operates a mandatory shuttle system from spring through fall to reduce traffic and protect the park’s natural beauty. Personal vehicles are not allowed on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive during these months, so you’ll need to use the shuttle to access many popular locations. Shuttles run frequently, with stops at key points like the Zion Lodge, Temple of Sinawava, and various trailheads. Be sure to plan extra time into your schedule to account for shuttle wait times and consider catching an early morning shuttle to avoid crowds. This is one example of hiring a local photographer- knowing how the park works, the shuttle system and areas to avoid for crowds is key for an intimate elopement.

Ceremony Locations in Zion National Park

Zion National Park designates specific areas for weddings and elopements. Here are all of the stunning spots:

  • Temple of Sinawava – A stunning riverside location with towering cliffs (up to 35 guests). *requires shuttle*
  • Zion Lodge Lawn – A scenic, accessible spot near the park lodge (up to 75 guests). *requires shuttle*
  • Menu Falls – A quiet, intimate waterfall setting (up to 10 guests). *requires shuttle*
  • South Campground Amphitheater – A rustic outdoor amphitheater (up to 100 guests).
  • Timber Creek Overlook – A breathtaking sunset spot with vast views (up to 20 guests). *please note this spot is actually not inside the park, it’s about 40 min away from the park entrance*

Each location offers a unique setting, so consider your group size and vision for your ceremony. Please note that this is just for your ceremony, we are allowed to take wedding photos anywhere in the park!

Best Time of Year to Elope in Zion

Zion experiences a wide range of temperatures, so timing is key:

  • Spring (March–May) – Mild temperatures, vibrant greenery, and fewer crowds.
  • Fall (September–November) – Crisp air, golden leaves, and stunning lighting.
  • Summer (June–August) – Very hot and busy; sunrise or sunset ceremonies are best.
  • Winter (December–February) – Fewer tourists and occasional snow make for unique, moody photos.

Best Photo Locations In Zion National Park

Some of the most popular and iconic locations for wedding photos:

  • Canyon Overlook– The most popular location for photos. It has the epic canyon backdrop that you’ve seen in photos. It’s about half a mile hike one way and takes around 30 minutes to get there. Sunset and sunrise are best here. Expect lots of crowds and difficulty finding parking. *no shuttle required*
  • Pa’Rus Trail – This trail is in the base of the canyon and starts at the main parking lot. It is a paved trail that has great views and river access. This is a great option for less hiking. *no shuttle required*
  • The Winding Road – You’ve probably seen photos of the windy road through the canyon after you go through the tunnel. There are many turn outs on the road where you can stop and take photos with the canyon and road in the background

I have spent years exploring the Zion area and have collected so many hidden gem locations. My couples get VIP access to my Zion location guide full of locations that no one really knows about. Zion has become a very very popular and busy park-which is why I show quite areas to my couples for a more intimate and unique experience! Consider BLM land and areas outside of the Park

There are SO many jaw dropping locations in the areas surrounding Zion National Park. I typically suggest having your ceremony at a near by BLM location to avoid the permit system with Zion National Park. My couples also get VIP access to my BLM location guide!
